Cyclophosphamide Effect on the Epithelial Covering of Rats Fetuse's Tongue: A Morphometric Study International Journal of Morphology
De Lucia,M. B. I.; Azoubel,R..
The present study has the aim to describe morphologically, morphometrically and stereologically some changes in the tongue epithelium of rat fetuses under the effect of cyclosphosphamide. This drug was used in a single 6mg/kg according to the body weight in the tenth pregnancy day while the control group received equal dosage of saline solution by the same duct and in the same day of pregnancy. The fetuses were plunged into fixed solution of Bouin for five days and the heads of then were divided and blocked in paraffin. Histological sections of six-micrometer thickness were performed and then colored with hematoxilin and eosin. It was used morphometrical and stereological analysis after the morphological study. The data were submitted under the...

Effect of lead acetate on neurobehavioral development of rats BJMBR
Mello,C.F.; Kraemer,C.K.; Filippin,A.; Morsch,V.M.; Rodrigues,A.L.S.; Martins,A.F.; Rubin,M.A..
We investigated the effects of lead exposure during the pre- and postnatal period on the neurobehavioral development of female Wistar rats (70-75 days of age, 120-150 g) using a protocol of lead intoxication that does not affect weight gain. Wistar rats were submitted to lead acetate intoxication by giving their dams 1.0 mM lead acetate. Control dams received deionized water. Growth and neuromotor development were assessed by monitoring daily the following parameters in 20 litters: body weight, ear unfolding, incisor eruption, eye opening, righting, palmar grasp, negative geotaxis, cliff avoidance and startle reflex. Spontaneous alternation was assessed on postnatal day 17 using a T maze. The animals' ability to equilibrate on a beaker rim was measured on...

Fetal Central Nervous System and Thymic Alterations Following Cyclophosphamide Treatment of Pregnant Mice International Journal of Morphology
Prakash,; Singh,Gajendra; Singh,Sukh Mahendra.
The present study assessed central nervous system (CNS) and immune system changes in murine fetuses after cyclophosphamide (CP) exposure during intrauterine life. A single CP dose of 0, 10, or 20mg/kg body weight was administered by intraperitoneal inj ection to pregnant mice (20/group) on day 11 of gestation (GD 11) and fetuses were evaluated on day 19 of gestation (GD 19). Fetuses were examined for external changes, and then the brains and thymuses were removed for further evaluations of histological changes, protein content, apoptotic cell count, DNA fragmentation, and in vitro cell proliferation using 1 fetus/litter for each assessment. Brains and thymuses from CP-exposed fetuses were smaller in size and distorted in overall shape compared to those...

Fitness of teratological morphotypes and heritability of deformities in the diatom Gomphonema gracile ArchiMer
Coquillé, Nathalie; Morin, Soizic.
Diatom teratologies have intrigued scientists since the XIXth century, with respect to their causes and origins. These deformities, mainly observed in long-term cultures or under high levels of pollution, were poorly considered, until they were recently found to be potential indicators of toxic impairment of freshwaters. However, very little is known about their ecology. In this study, the growth and fitness of morphologically distinct descendants of the same cell line of Gomphonema gracile (teratological vs. non teratological forms) were compared over a typical growth cycle. Contrary to expectations, teratological populations grew slightly faster, at a rate of 0.47 ± 0.03 divisions.day−1, versus 0.41 ± 0.04 for the normal morphotype. They had similar...

Inferring the developmental basis of the sea star abnormality "double ambulacral groove" (Echinodermata: Asteroidea) RChHN
HOTCHKISS,FREDERICK H C.
Very rarely a ray of a sea star is unusually wide and has two parallel ambulacral grooves that extend to a single tip. Such a ray has two terminal plates that are coalesced laterally. This abnormality is inferred to develop as a rare result of regeneration because it is recorded from a species with obligate asexual reproduction (fission and regeneration of halves; no gametes). This conclusion is supported also by an example where the abnormality affects only the distal third of a ray

Intersexuality in Farrodes Peters, 1971 (Ephemeroptera: Leptophlebiidae: Atalophlebiinae) from Brazil Rev. Bras. entomol.
Santos,Rodrigo Pires; Moreto,Viviana; Mariano,Rodolfo.
ABSTRACT Gynandromorphism or intersexuality is a rare condition where the individual has male and female features. In this report we described two imagoes of Farrodes xingu Domínguez et al. (1996) from Brazil presenting intersex traits. We considered the arranged sexual characters as antero-posterior and bilateral. One individual has a male head, abdomen full of eggs and the subgenital plate with a malformed outset of penes (antero-posterior), while the other individual has half of the head with a male-like turbinate eye and the other half with a regular female-like one, and with malformed male genitalia (bilateral).

Larval ontogeny and morphological variations of Psaroniocompsa incrustata (Lutz) (Diptera: Simuliidae) in the State of Rio Grande do Norte, Northeastern Brazil Neotropical Entomology
Silva,Adriele N B; Andrade,Herbet T A; Ríos-Velásquez,Claudia M; Pessoa,Felipe A C; Medeiros,Jansen F.
Psaroniocompsa incrustata (Lutz) is an antropophilic species widely distributed in Central and South America. It is the vector of Onchocerca volvulus in a Brazilian focus and has been considered a plague in several areas of this country. The objective of this study was to determine the number of larval instars and to describe the morphological variations and teratologies of a population of P. incrustata from the Pium river, Rio Grande do Norte State. The number of larval instars was determined measuring the head capsule lateral length of 3,164 larvae. The larval instars were determined using the measurement frequency distribution, Student's t-test, the Dyar and Crosby growth rules. Eight larval instars were determined for P. incrustata. A high rate of...

Morphological abnormality in a Longnose Stingray Hypanus guttatus (Bloch & Schneider, 1801) (Myliobatiformes: Dasyatidae) Biota Neotropica
Schmid,Kurt; Andrade,Marcelo; Machado,Fabiola; Araujo,Juliana; Corrêa,Eglé; Giarrizzo,Tommaso.
Abstract: A Longnose stingray Hypanus guttatus (Bloch & Schneider, 1801) embryo with a major asymmetrical morphological abnormality to its pectoral fin was obtained from commercial shrimp fisher's bycatch, off the coast of the Amazon River Mouth in northern Brazil. The specimen and the deformity, which would presumably have impeded its long-term survival, are described and documented in detail. We herein provide the first report of an abnormal individual of this species for the Brazilian coast.

Fuhrmann,Juares; Dias,Bruno Mateus Ribeiro; Rodrigues,Sérgio Roberto.
ABSTRACT Some species of Cyclocephala Dejean, 1821 (Coleoptera, Scarabaeidae, Dynastinae, Cyclocephalini) were reported as crop or pasture pests. Within this genus, Cyclocephla tucumana Bréthes, 1904 was noticed in cultivated areas in South Brazil, 2009 − 2010. Other study found larvae of the species associated with pastures in Aquidauana, Mato Grasso do Sul State (MS), 2009. In the present study, larvae of C. tucumana were collected in pasture areas from August 2015 to July 2016, in Cassilândia, MS. The material was reared in laboratory for the description of immatures, and the regional population was studied to clarify its dynamics. Immatures were abundant throughout the years and are described for the first time. Taxonomic discussion, updated key to...
